Annual General Meeting, followed by a talk by Mike Millward
Typology
After the short AGM, Mike Millward give a talk relating to the “Nature of Gothic” exhibition:
Typology the way in which, in the Middle Ages, the Old Testament was interpreted as foretelling events in the New. This was the basis of the medieval “Biblia Pauperum” or Poor Man’s Bible which was reproduced in late 15th century Germany as printed blockbooks.
R. E Hart had an important collection of blockbooks, most of which ended up in the Cambridge University Library after his death. These are currently on loan to the Nature of Gothic exhibition, together with an example he bequeathed to Blackburn Museum.
The talk will explain how these primitive looking, but actually quite sophisticated books were conceived, using examples from the books in the exhibition.
