David Shipway Memorial Lecture

This annual lecture was founded to commemorate David’s contribution to the work of the Friends of Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery, both as Honorary Secretary and staunch supporter.  He and his wife Pat contributed greatly to the work – and enjoyment – of the group from its inception until his untimely death in 2016.

In this, the second of the lectures, member and local artist Mike Waters charts the slow development of realistic two-dimensional art through the depiction of English monarchs down the ages; pondering on why for instance we’ve no idea of what William the Conqueror looked like; or whose is the first kingly portrait we can trust; and to what uses has royal portraiture been put.

Forthcoming Events/Actitivites

Tuesday 12 October at 2:00 PM

Following a request from the Museum in response to the Covid emergency, the Friends’ Committee agreed that meeting will be held on Tuesday afternoons during the 2021/22 season. Depending on the response of members, this change may become permanent.
The reason behind the change is that the Museum is closed to the public on Tuesdays, and only those attending the meetings will be admitted. The door would be manned by a member of the museum staff.

Meetings will be held at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery on TUESDAY afternoons
